The fact that it is just a bruise as confirmed by the MRI is significant. During Monday’s game, Ramirez left with discomfort in his left thumb. According to the team, it was something that had been causing him discomfort for a couple of weeks. Now with a clear diagnosis, the Indians can continue to look ahead and hopefully have Ramirez as a staple in their lineup sometime over the next few days.
Jose Ramirez Role on the Indians Roster
As mentioned previously, Jose Ramirez is a core part of the Cleveland Indians roster. Ramirez originally signed with the team as an international free agent in November of 2009. He made his MLB debut on September 1st, 2013 at the age of 20 and immediately provided a big boost to the Indians lineup.
While Ramirez had a down season last year in 2019, he did finish in the Top 3 in the American League Most Valuable Player Award voting in both 2017 and 2018. Furthermore, during both of those seasons he earned a Silver Slugger Award as well as an All-Star nod. During the 2017 season alone, he finished with a career high and led the league with 56 doubles!
So far this season, the 27-year old is batting .248/.350/.478 over the span of 183 plate appearances. In that sample, he has 39 hits, seven doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 26 RBI, 24 walks, and 36 strikeouts.
One of the other things that makes Ramirez so valuable to the Indians is his ability to play second base. The team fortified that position with the addition of Cesar Hernandez this past offseason. However, depending on when the team’s number one overall prospect Nolan Jones becomes a fixture on the big league roster, Ramirez could find himself back at second base.
Ramirez will enter the final guaranteed year of his current five-year, $26 million dollar deal next season. After that, his contract includes an $11 million dollar team option or $2 million dollar buyout option for the 2022 season along with a $13 million dollar team option for 2023.
