Mets Add Tyler Bashlor to 30-Man Roster

The New York Mets announced Monday that they recalled relief pitcher Tyler Bashlor to the 30-man roster. In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned Corey Oswalt to their alternate training site in Brooklyn after his rough outing Sunday night against the Atlanta Braves.

With the Mets fifth spot in the rotation still up in the air, there is a chance that 10th ranked prospect David Peterson will be called up to make the start. As of right now, both he and Daniel Zamora remain on the taxi squad as manager Luis Rojas has yet to name a starter for Tuesday’s game at Fenway Park.

At times, Bashlor has an electric fastball and shows that he belongs in the big leagues. He’s a pitcher that can give the Mets multiple innings with a mid to upper 90’s fastball. However, his numbers are not pretty as he is currently 0-6 in the major leagues and has pitched to an ERA of 5.33.

Earlier this year during spring training, Bashlor was sharp in his first three appearances but had a nightmare outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on March 5. He lasted two-thirds of an inning and allowed six runs on seven hits, including three home runs. He followed that up with a scoreless outing against the Miami Marlins four days later.

Role with Mets

Bashlor will likely have to work his way up to a more significant role. The Mets have a deep back-end of the bullpen, and Bashlor will likely be an innings filler. The former 11th round pick out of South Georgia State is another young arm the Mets hope will continue to develop.

Teammate Drew Smith pitched well in his lone appearance this year as the Mets are still looking for these pitchers to develop into what they were brought in for. The Mets made a handful of moves at the trade deadline in 2017 and have already seen both Jacob Rhame and Bobby Wahl go to different organizations after acquiring the young relievers.
