Rockies 2020 Schedule
It is the final quarter of the regular season, but that didn’t stop Major League Baseball and the Colorado Rockies from releasing their 2020 schedule on Monday. Next year, baseball will start earlier than ever on March 26. The Rockies and the rest of the National League West will face the teams from the American League Central in Interleague Play. Chicago Cubs fans will have to wait until September to see their beloved Northsiders in Denver. Here is the breakdown of the Rockies 2020 schedule by month with some notes to think about as we already look forward to next season.
March/April 2020
The MLB will open the season the earliest it ever has when all the teams start the regular season on March 26, 2020. The Colorado Rockies will begin their campaign against the National League West in more ways than one, opening with a four-game set in San Diego against the Padres. Colorado will play the Padres 10 times in the first 18 games, with two series in San Diego and one in Denver.
That begins a hectic month where the Rockies will play 19 of the first 24 against NL West opponents. They will play away series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Francisco Giants in addition to the Padres games. The Rockies will play other teams outside their division, too, with two games against the Texas Rangers and three at home against the St. Louis Cardinals. In addition, they will close out the month with a road trip to Milwaukee for three against the Brewers and two games in Chicago to play the White Sox.
May 2020
May continues the road trip with a series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizen’s Bank Park and then to Detroit to take on the Tigers. The Rockies will come back home for seven games before heading back out on the road to face the Miami Marlins, a team they have never played well against. Mcubed has the Colorado Rockies at 38-68 against the Marlins away from Coors Field. Back inside the division, the Rockies play the Giants seven times in May and the Dodgers at home for four.
June 2020
June starts with 10 games against the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. They will play a home series against Clint Hurdle, former manager of the Colorado Rockies, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Rockies end the month by playing the Kansas City Royals in Denver, the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, and on the road against the Pirates. Colorado should be just about ready for the All-Star Break at this point.
July 2020
The All-Star Game is in Los Angeles next year. Dodger Stadium will be abuzz with stars both on and off the field for the Mid-Summer Classic. At this point, Colorado will have played almost two-thirds (96 baseball games) of their season. The second half of the year for the Rockies begins with the Atlanta Braves and Marlins at home. The Rockies are a completely different team against the Marlins at home; they are 59-43 overall in Denver because they score almost three more runs per game against the Fish. Colorado then head out for six games on the road against the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals. July will provide a mild break from divisional opposition, with only seven games against San Francisco and Arizona. This will change the next month.
August 2020
In August, the Colorado Rockies will play over half of their games (15 baseball games) against the NL West, and 10 of those games are on the road. The dog days of summer will come to a grinding halt with a month-end trip to the east coast. The Rockies have a series against the Braves followed by a four-game set with the New York Mets.
September 2020
The Colorado Rockies finish their final home-and-away series with three against the Chicago Cubs and then three at Wrigley Field. The Rockies final six regular season baseball games come at home against the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks. According to Manny Randhawa, a reporter for MLB.com based in Denver, “The Rockies get to play 15 of their final 20 regular-season games at Coors Field, which could be huge if they’re chasing a playoff spot. That’s five home series in September, against the Indians, Cubs, Padres, Dodgers, and D-backs.”
Finish
Well, that was fun, but the same will not be said of the Colorado Rockies in 2020. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who will probably be coming off a third trip to the World Series, will look to repeat as National League West Champions. The San Diego Padres will look to improve with young players like Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Francisco Mejia to finish second. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Rockies will fight to finish in the middle of the pack. At least they will both end 2020 ahead of the San Francisco Giants. As usual, Colorado will have the hot streak coming out of Spring Training but will wither with the heat and summer sun. I guess there is always next year.
