Struggles in 2019

After being traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Braves in 2018, Gausman was impressive. In 10 starts last season with the Braves, Gausman went 5-3 to go along with a stellar 2.87 ERA. However, in 2019, he could never find his footing.

Things started off poorly for Gausman as he was placed on the injured list to start the season due to a sore shoulder. Once back from injury, things didn’t get much better for him on the mound. In his first 13 starts, Gausman posted a 2-5 record with a 6.21 ERA. After coming off a pair of rough starts, Gausman was placed back on the IL with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. In his second stint back, he continued to struggle. Gausman would finish the 2019 season in Atlanta with a 3-7 record and 6.19 ERA over 16 starts.

“I’m not having the year that anybody thought I would and I’m not in the situation I want to be right now, but I’m going to get the ball again in five days so I’ll stay focused,” Gausman said Friday. “Two starts ago I was pretty good. Can’t hold my head too much.”

Reds Rotation

With this acquisition of Gausman, the Reds now boast one of the best starting staffs in the league. Even though he has struggled, the Reds will hope Gausman can turn things around and join forces with other standouts like Alex Wood, Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, Trevor Bauer, and Anthony DeSclafani. If Gausman can return to form, look out for the Reds in 2020.
