After a tough start to their World Series defense, the Boston Red Sox have made a move that will be very favorable within their fanbase. On Friday afternoon, the team announced the call up of young third baseman, Michael Chavis, along with a few other notable roster moves.
Boston Red Sox Call Up Michael Chavis
The Sox announced three roster moves, early on Friday afternoon. Infielder Eduardo Nunez was placed on the 10-day injury list, following back strain complications. Boston called up Chavis to fill this role while also bringing Tzu-Wei Lin into the fold, who played a role at different periods throughout the 2018 season. Pitcher, Erasmo Ramirez was DFA’d in order to create the other roster spot.
The big news here is obviously Michael Chavis getting his first call from the big leagues. Chavis headlined Boston’s Top 30 prospect rankings, prior to the season. He also backed this up in spring training. Over the course of the spring, Chavis hit four home runs and tallied ten RBI, for the Sox. In the 2019 regular season, thus far, the prospect has appeared in twelve games. These have been for Boston’s Triple-A affiliate, Pawtucket Red Sox. He’s averaged .250 to start the year. But, Sox fans know what he’s really capable of, having caught glimpses in the spring.
How Chavis Will Come Into The Line-Up
The expectation of seeing Chavis in a Red Sox jersey this early on, perhaps, wasn’t very high. Chavis moved up to AAA during last season and played just eight games at that level. His time to shine at the major league level has come pretty quickly. It comes at a time where the Sox need an injection of quality. They need to get the ball rolling as it did for the entirety of 2018.
With Nunez and Dustin Pedroia both hitting the IL, this week, and Brock Holt out with a scratched cornea, Boston’s infield depth isn’t exactly ideal. As well as his already impressive big bat, Chavis also brings a dynamic edge to the diamond. The youngster specializes at the hot corner but is also known to be capable of playing at first. With Mitch Moreland on a hot streak, in a platoon with Steve Pearce, Chavis probably won’t get used at first base. However, where he would fit in is with another young star, Rafael Devers, in a platoon at third base. This talent gives the Red Sox plenty promise for the future of their infield. Chavis’ growth is more important than his production right now, but his ability is obvious and he could get a genuine chance to make an impact during this call-up.
This stint with the Red Sox could be short-lived, depending on the return of Nunez, but it’ll be an important period of time in Chavis’ career. He’ll get to experience being with a major league team during the regular season. When his opportunity comes, there’s no doubt that Chavis will be ready to take it and swing for the fences.
