Big Sexy has done it again with another milestone! Bartolo Colon has become the all-time wins leader from the Dominican Republic. The Texas Rangers starter defeated the Kansas City Royals 6-3. Although it wasn’t an overly dominant start (nine hits, three earned runs over six innings), this win has a lot of meaning for Colon. It probably makes sense that Bartolo beats this organization, as he’s done well against Kansas City over the years. This is his 15th win against the Royals, third most out of all 30 teams he’s beaten. The first of those wins came in 1998. To put that into perspective, Raul Mondesi Jr. (who started for the Royals tonight) was only two years old! Four starters in the Royals lineup tonight were less than seven years old at the time of that victory in 1998.
Colon has reinvented himself over the years, going from having an electric fastball to fooling hitters with a fastball that rarely touches 90. The man is 45 years old and still going strong with no signs of fading away.
With this win, Colon now has 244 in his career, accumulated over the past 21 years, making him officially leapfrog Juan Marichal on the wins list for his native Dominican Republic.
Bartolo Colon reaches a Big Sexy Milestone
Bartolo The Great
This is just one of the few milestones Colon has achieved over the last several years:
Clearly Colon’s versatility as a hitter and athleticism on the mound allow him, as a result, to excel better than most.
Colon’s next milestone will be becoming the winningest pitcher in Latin America. He needs just two more wins to surpass Dennis Martinez, hailing from Nicaragua, to officially be crowned with that title. Colon has plenty of chances to do so this year, with a little over half the season left to go. His next two opponents will likely be the San Diego Padres, whom he hit that rocket against, and the Houston Astros, who know he’s capable of throwing a no-no.
