Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is out for the rest of the 2018 season. Cabrera left the game in the third inning against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. After undergoing an MRI, they discovered Cabrera ruptured his biceps tendon and would require season-ending surgery. Tigers skipper Rob Gardenhire confirmed the news in a press conference following the 6-4 loss. ABC Detroit’s Brad Galli tweeted a video of the announcement. The Tigers are third in the A.L. Central with a record of 31-37 behind the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota. This is tough news for Cabrera and the entire Tigers organization.
Miguel Cabrera Out for Remainder of 2018 Season
The former triple crown winner was in the mist of having a bounce-back season after a lackluster 2017 by Miguel Cabrera standards. Last year he batted just .249/.329/.728 with only 16 home runs and 60 RBI, the lowest RBI total in his career. He boasted a slash line of .299/.396/.843 with three home runs and 22 RBI on the year before tonight’s game. Cabrera is under contract with the Tigers for another five years and is set to make $162 million over that span. The Tigers cannot replace Cabrera’s bat with just one player. They’ll need a contribution from a number of their hitters to fill the void if they want to stay relevant in the AL Central.
Detroit Tigers Moving Forward
This comes just a week after the Tigers selected Casey Mize first overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. Although the Tigers won’t see Mize take the mound for them anytime soon, the mood was optimistic around the club until this unfortunate incident. John Hicks is second behind Cabrera on the Tigers depth chart. That is an option for them or they can dip into the farm. It is too early to tell how Gardenhire plans on adjusting the lineup but it’s clear they’ll lack some much-needed pop for the remainder of the 2018 season.
