With the 2018 MLB Draft quickly approaching, many teams are gearing up to select the player they hope can prosper into a star, and get them a World Series title. Teams can find anything from rare gems in the later rounds to busts in the first round. In this Last Word On Baseball Draft Profile, we take an in-depth look at outfielder Connor Scott.
Connor Scott 2018 MLB Draft Profile
Scott comes to the draft out of H.B Plant High School in Tampa Bay, Florida. The school has their fair share of MLB stars such as Hall of Famer Wade Boggs as well as Kyle Tucker, who was picked 5th overall by the Houston Astros in the 2015 MLB Draft. Scott has been compared to Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich in the past by MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo and others. Scott’s accolades are also quite impressive coming into the draft as a member of the 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game 1st Team All-American. Scott also has a college future to think about if he is drafted since he is committed to the University of Flordia. He would exclusively play baseball for the Gators if he chose to stay in college.
Strengths
According to MLB Pipeline‘s scouting report, Scott is known most for his incredible speed, which is helpful to have as an outfielder. Not only can Scott chase down balls, but his speed can be used very well on the bases and could be used as a pinch runner. Pipeline’s scouting report also highlights that Scott is quite good in the batter’s box with his contact. The scouting report done by Perfect Game highlights his batting mechanics as something that is also quite strong for an 18-year-old prospect.
Weaknesses
In the MLB Pipeline report, one of Scott’s major weaknesses that they highlight is his hitting power. This may not turn out to be a huge problem considering his contact is incredible, but if he can figure out how to swing for power, Scott will be in a very good position. His fielding is also a slight area of concern as well as his arm, seeing as he has struggled to make throws from the outfield.
Final Thoughts
Connor Scott is easily a first round talent in this upcoming draft. Like most prospects, he still has a little bit of work to do, but he is no doubt one of the better outfielders and prospects in this draft. It’s more likely than not that Scott will enter the draft as an outfielder, but he has been a pitcher before which could give teams the option to use him in that manner if they choose. He does have a recorded 93 miles per hour fastball and a nice curveball according to MLB Pipeline. However, Scott should do just fine as an outfielder in the draft and get drafted quite early.
According to Jonathan Mayo’s latest mock draft, Scott is predicted to go to the Miami Marlins with the 13th overall pick. This would be a great pick by the Marlins who need some good outfielders after trading Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and Marcell Ozuna during the offseason. Scott would be a great replacement.
