Logan Warmoth 2017 MLB Draft Profile

Shortstops tend to be great athletes. There’s low risk in drafting collegiate shortstops, as converting to other fielding positions is a strong possibility for most, if necessary. Add in a greater than .300 average in one of the toughest conferences in NCAA Division I baseball and you get Logan Warmoth.

Logan Warmoth 2017 MLB Draft Profile

Overview

Logan Warmoth played for Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs, Florida, before signing with the University of North Carolina Tarheels. He is a three-year starter at shortstop, and has improved throughout his collegiate career. Warmouth possesses four of the five position player tools.

Strengths

Logan Warmoth stands 6-0 and is listed at 185 lbs, and has the possibility of developing into a five-tool player. He is solid at the plate when hitting for average, posting a slash line of .336/.410/.562/.972 through 55 games and 235 at-bats in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He played in the Cape Cod League in 2016, and hit .270 against advanced competition. Over three years and 638 at-bats, he has ground into a mere 15 double plays. His base running improved from last year, leading him to steal 18 bases in 21 attempts.

Last year showcased his breakout season in the field, as he made just11 errors in 212 defensive chances. He took part in 30 double plays for the Tarheels. He’s got the arm strength to clear short to first with feet planted or on the run, and can complete the jump throw during a 4-6-3. He possesses solid fundamentals in the field.

Weaknesses

Warmoth’s lone weakness appears to be a lack of power off the bat. He does not abuse pitchers in college baseball. He has hit nine home runs in 55 games, and averages one home run every 26 at-bats. That’s actually an improvement in the power department over his previous two years. Working with a professional hitting coach to level his swing out a bit should make him into a true five-tool shortstop.
