One of the hardest feats for a batter to complete is to hit for the cycle. As of this morning, two batters finished the cycle, both at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado. San Diego Padre Wil Myers hit the first cycle of the year on April 10, 2017, while visiting the Colorado Rockies. Trea Turner hit the second of the year 16 days later in the same ballpark. On April 29, 2017, Carlos Gomez hit the third cycle of the year. This occurred when his Rangers hosted the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Globe Life Park in Arlington.
Carlos Gomez Hits the Third Cycle of the Year
In the first inning, Gomez ripped a Jesse Chavez pitch for a two-out double into left field. He did not advance from second, as the inning ended on the next at-bat. In the third inning, he hit a blooper into shallow right field, getting a single, again off of Chavez. He took Chavez to deep center off the wall, for a stand-up triple in the fifth inning. Centerfielder Mike Trout had the chance to make the play, but the ball edged off of his glove.
A pitching change for the Angels brought Jose Valdez to pitch in the seventh inning. Gomez smashed the first pitch from Valdez to deep center. This time he paused at the plate, and flipped his bat, because there was no doubt. The ball came to rest in the grassy knoll above center field in Arlington.
The Rangers went on to win the game, 6-3. Gomez went 4-4 in the game, and accounted for three RBI, and two runs scored.
He’s done it before
Gomez joins 30+ major league players as having hit for the cycle twice. Gomez accomplished the feat before while playing for the Minnesota Twins on May 7, 2008. This puts him in the running for second most all-time. John Reilly, Bob Meusel, Babe Herman, and Adrian Beltre, all have accomplished the feat three times.
