Daniel Royer And Omer Damari Join The New York Red Bulls
Austrian winger Daniel Royer arrives in Harrison from FC Midtjylland (Denmark) and Israeli striker Omer Damari joins on loan from RB Leipzig (Germany). Both players bring a wealth of international experience, strong goal-scoring records and will expect to fit well into the Red Bulls’ high-press system.
The MLS transfer window closed on Wednesday, as teams scrambled to improve rosters. TAM, GAM and everything in between was on the move. The New York Red Bulls brought in two players that they believe will bring goals and success.
We look at what to expect for the two as they prepare to make their MLS debuts in New York.
Daniel Royer
When the Red Bulls traded longtime midfielder and fan favorite Lloyd Sam to bitter rivals D.C. United, it was a random and odd move from a team that had just embraced the concept of squad cohesion. With the transfer of Royer, one can see what manager Jesse Marsch had in mind.
The 26-year old brings to New York experience from both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, as well as six caps with the Austrian national team. Goal production took a dip last year, but he displayed consistent form with Austria Wien over two seasons, registering 14 strikes from 2013-2015.
Expect to see Royer fill a wide midfield role with New York. The Red Bulls will utilize his flexibility to be productive further up the field. Teammates have praised his hard-working style, which will serve him well with Marsch’s demand for pressing opposing sides to find New York goals.
Along with Gonzalo Veron, Mike Grella and Alex Muyl; New York now boast an impressive array of offensive weapons for wide midfield positions.
Omer Damari
With star forward Bradley Wright-Phillips finding himself overrun by defenses as the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation, the Red Bulls knew assistance was needed at the position from time to time.
The 27-year old striker joins the Red Bulls on loan until season’s end from RB Leipzig ahead of their first ever Bundesliga campaign. Having spent last season on loan to Red Bull Salzburg, Damari becomes the first player to ever feature for the three Austrian-owned sides. He brings a proven scoring record throughout his career and will expect to compete for goals and playing time.
He possesses great size and over 100 goals in the Israeli Premier League. Expect to see Damari contribute immediately to New York and their playoff push.
Omer Damari will occupy a designated player slot during his time in New York. His return to Germany is expected in January. A strong MLS performance will assist Damari in gaining a fulltime spot in Leipzig’s roster in the future.
Both Daniel Royer and Omer Damari come to New York motivated and eager to showcase their abilities. In Damari’s case, he will only have the rest of this current season. New York will expect goals from both and steady production.
Jesse Marsch’s ability to integrate both players immediately will be key. If he can, it could provide New York with a great chance of lifting their first ever MLS Cup.
