The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines. Some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid. It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day. Welcome to Quick Slant. I created this column as my way of sharing with you the headlines from around the NFL that I feel are most interesting. I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels! So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:
Let’s start off on a sad note today. Brian Urlacher, unwanted by Chicago, is starting to feel a little downhearted. In a recent interview, the LB said, “Maybe no one wants me”. Doesn’t that sound like the last kid picked in a six-year old’s game of pick-up baseball? Suck it up, buttercup……From sad to kinda funny, new Patriots safety Adrian Wilson “jokingly” offered Kyle Arrington a year supply of diapers in exchange for #24. As a dad, take it, Kyle. It’s a gigantic pain in the arse to have to go to change a crappy diaper at 3am only to realize you are out – it happens! If Wilson is going to assure you are well stocked, and we do want this in writing – “ALL IN”!……Osi Umenyiora is getting big time attention from the Dirty Birds front office. The FA NYG DE (I’m gonna see if my wife can figure out the string of acronyms…you do the same!) is being pursued hard, and if the Falcons people are being truthful, they are getting close to nabbing him. Is it just me or are good teams getting great, and bad teams getting worse this off-season? Is this the end of parity? Sheesh……It looks like Houston has signed veteran punter Shane Lechler to a contract – yeah, I didn’t care either……Houston finally consummated with Safety Ed Reed. The deal looks like 3 years for $15mill. When the contract is over, Ed Reed will be 64…….Let’s finish on a brighter note after yesterday’s column’s more depressing conclusion. A “herd” of NFL players visited Africa recently, to spread some humanitarian aid to some pretty poor areas. Anquan Boldin took in the gold making process in Senegal, while Larry Fitzgerald went to a women’s garden project. While there is always a cynical part of me that wants to assume some of it is PR, kudos for players who take it upon themselves to use their fortune and fame for worthy causes. Cheers.
