The battle to dethrone Robert Lewandowski as the top scorer in the Bundesliga will feature many familiar faces. It will be a colossal task to better the goal-scoring output the Bayern Munich striker has displayed in the German top flight in recent years. However, the 2020/21 season promises to feature a much closer race for the Golden Boot. Here are five contenders to claim the Bundesliga Golden Boot.
Bundesliga: Five Contenders for the 2020/21 Golden Boot
Jadon Sancho
If Borussia Dortmund’s talented winger remains at the club for the duration of the Bundesliga season then he will certainly be a player who is capable of producing lots of goals. Sancho finished in third place in the 2019/20 Golden Boot race with 17 goals in 32 appearances. The 20-year-old might just be in for an even better season this time around. He has yet to record a season of 20 or more goals and what could potentially be his last Bundesliga campaign for Dortmund might turn out to be his best yet.
Andrej Kramaric
After an injury-filled 2019/20 season, Kramaric returns to Hoffenheim healthy for the upcoming campaign. He already scored two goals in Hoffenheim’s DFB-Pokal first round fixture and appears to be in good form. Kramaric scored 12 goals in 19 appearances last season to finish outside of the top five in the Golden Boot race. However, had he been able to play a full season with his club that number would likely have been higher.
Wout Weghorst
The consistent Dutch striker has produced two terrific seasons for Wolfsburg. Weghorst scored 16 goals last season to finish in fourth place in the Golden Boot race, which was one less than his 2018/19 goal total of 17. The 28-year-old goalscorer is an aerial threat and a lethal penalty taker. Weghorst has yet to miss a spot-kick in his Bundesliga career. He should once again find himself among the elite goal scorers in the Bundesliga.
Erling Braut Haaland
Dortmund’s talented young striker appears to have the best chance of dethroning Lewandowski in the Golden Boot race. Haaland was an instant contributor for Dortmund upon arrival in January. He scored 13 goals in 15 league appearances to record a very impressive goal total in a short period of time.
The upcoming campaign could see Haaland have his best season to date in his career. He has excellent chemistry with his teammates on the attack and has been a reliable target man up front. Dortmund will likely have matches this season where they score goals for fun and Haaland has the opportunity to be a part of the scoring. A 30-goal season is not out of the question of what the Norwegian striker can do this season in the Bundesliga.
Robert Lewandowski
Lewandowski will be in search of a fourth consecutive Golden Boot this season. He has proven to be a generational player at his position with his recent dominance in Europe and has shown no signs of showing down in his performances. After scoring 34 goals during the 2019/20 campaign he may very well end up eclipsing that total in the upcoming season. He did miss three fixtures in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season and if he can play all 34 fixtures this time around he might end up with a higher total.
Gerd Muller’s 40-goal single-season record might be in danger of being surpassed by Lewandowski. The Polish striker has gotten closer and closer to overtaking Muller’s record. It will be one of the storylines to watch in the upcoming Bundesliga season. If Lewandowski claims the Golden Boot again, the 2020/21 title might the most special of this career, especially if he can better Muller’s 40 goals.
