B.C. Lions 2016 CFL Draft: Top 3 Needs

After a busy off-season with a number of roster moves, we look ahead to the B.C. Lions 2016 CFL Draft, looking at the top needs for the team moving forward.

Now that the major free agent signings have been finalized, the Last Word On Sports CFL department will be looking at the top three needs for each team heading into the 2016 CFL Draft. Today, the B.C. Lions are the focus. The Lions have six picks including the third overall pick in the first round.

The B.C. Lions have had a very busy off-season with signing players at a variety of different positions such as running back Jeremiah Johnson, defensive back Mike Edem, defensive back Brandon Stewart, wide receiver Nick Moore, offensive lineman Levy Adcock, and quarterback Keith Price just to name a few. Here is a look at the Lions 2016 CFL Draft needs before the big day.

B.C. Lions 2016 CFL Draft: Top 3 Needs

Offensive Line

CFL general managers like to load up on offensive line players whenever they can. With a draft that is very deep in this section, about 35 of them to be exact, including prospects, it would be a good idea to take advantage of that. With B.C. currently having only six players in this spot, they can use the extra depth and protection for their quarterbacks. There are seven different offensive linemen currently projected to go high in the draft. Charles Vaillancourt, Michael Couture, and Jason Lauzon-Seguin could be some of the players for them to keep their eyes on.

Secondary

This was a huge problem for B.C. last season. Once the second half of the season came around, their secondary was not as terrible as the first half was, and they finally did start to gel. Acquiring two defensive backs in the off-season is a huge boost in this aspect as well, especially with Josh Johnson signing an NFL deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Depth never hurts, though, especially as it was a negative factor in the previous season.

Linebacker

Losing international linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats might be a tough one for B.C., with his 57 tackles and three interceptions in the 2015 season. Although Adam Bighill, who had 117 tackles and four sacks, is their big piece in the linebacker role, another threat could be used there. A new linebacker with Bighill would complement him nicely.
