Anthony Martial Scores Manchester United Millennial

Sunday was a joyous day for anyone who supports Manchester United, and for many important reasons. The club honored club legend, Sir Bobby Charlton, by renaming a section of the stands after him, United gained three points off a strong Everton side to stay within reach of Champions League qualification for next campaign, and youngster Anthony Martial scored the 1,000th Premier League home goal for the club.

Old Trafford, and everyone in attendance, was treated to a wonderful day for the club on Sunday with three very important things occurring on the day. Firstly, the club honored the well-respected club legend, Sir Bobby Charlton, by renaming a section of the stands after him. You would be hard pressed to find a person in the history of the club that embodies what it means to be a Red Devil more than Sir Bobby Charlton, and for that the renaming of the stands is well-deserved.

Sir Bobby played an impressive 758 matches for the Manchester United first team, scoring 249 goals in the process. His 249 goals for the club in all competitions still stands, as of April 4th, 2016, as the Manchester United record with Wayne Rooney nipping at the heels of the record. He was also, at the age of 20, one of the few members of the club to survive the Munich Air Disaster, a tragic and unforgettable piece of club history.

The second event that United supporters around the world were happy to see on Sunday was a 1-0 win over a strong Everton side, a win that cannot be understated in importance. The three points gained from Everton on Sunday keeps United only a single point off Manchester City for the fourth, and final, place for Champions League qualification for next campaign. It also puts United two points ahead of West Ham United, who are surely the surprise of the season (other than Leicester, of course!), and those points will surely play a big role come the final few matches of the season.

The third event that occurred on Sunday, and one that will surely impress anyone who supports United or anyone else, was the scoring of the 1,000th Premier League home goal for Manchester United by young superstar Anthony Martial. Martial has done everything asked of him, and more, this campaign since arriving from AS Monaco for a whopping transfer fee of $54.5 million, and that could end up being much larger if he reaches his full potential.

Since arriving on the scene at Old Trafford, Martial has scored 13 goals across all competitions in 40 appearances for the Red Devils. When you take into account that he plays striker and left wing, both as effectively as the other, these stats and the fact that he was the man to score the millennial comes as no surprise. He is a phenomenal footballing talent that will continue to grow with the club in this period of post-Ferguson transition. His importance to the club cannot be shown in words, and the fans have been sure to show him the love and support he so truly deserves.
