Wil Trapp Receives Call-Up to US U-23s Ahead of Olympic Playoff

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC today announced that Homegrown midfielder Wil Trapp has received an international call-up from the United States Under-23 men’s National Team. Trapp is set to join the U-23s before their two-match playoff against Colombia for a berth in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

The playoff against Colombia will decide the final berth in the men’s soccer tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which are set to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first leg of the playoff takes place in Colombia on March 25, followed by the Stars & Stripes returning home for the second leg on March 29 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Trapp and the U-23s previously finished in third place in the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship, defeating Canada by 2-0 final on October 13 to earn the right to face Colombia for an Olympic berth. Trapp was also called up by the senior National Team for the 2016 U.S. Soccer January camp, and he has two senior caps to his name, including an appearance on February 6 of this year against Canada.

Of the 26 players currently on the Black & Gold active roster, 14 have received a senior National Team call-up throughout their careers (Harrison Afful, Corey Ashe, Conor Casey, Ethan Finlay, Waylon Francis, Kei Kamara, Ola Kamara, Emil Larsen, Cedrick Mabwati, Justin Meram, Michael Parkhurst, Rodrigo Saravia, Tony Tchani, Trapp).

Crew SC’s next match takes place on April 1st as the Black and Gold heads to Frisco, TX to face FC Dallas.
