Barnstormers blow out Blizzard, move to 2-0

The Iowa Barnstormers made the move to 2-0 on the season with ease, defeating the Green Bay Blizzard 73-21.

Iowa started off the game with a touchdown on their first drive with a Lucas Hefty touchdown. The former Upper-Iowa Peacock had a significant cheering section that made his night one to remember.

Iowa was quick to score on the other side of the ball as well. Green Bay QB Matt Behrendt’s pass went through a receiver’s hands and tipped up to former Cyclone Ter’Ran Benton. Benton essentially scored on his first play back with Iowa.

“It’s a blessing to be out here, it’s a blessing to be home, and it’s a blessing that we have a lot of fans to support you from Iowa State. It felt really good, especially my first play on defense [resulting in a] touchdown,” Benton said. “It’s just a blessing that I have a crowd that I know that’s family that’s here for football.”

It’s not hard to tell that he loves to be back in Des Moines playing for the Barnstormers in front of his hometown fans. However, those hometown fans were in for a bit of a surprise.

Pieces missing of the Barnstormers Roster

No releases have been put out by the team yet, however former Cyclones Aaron Wimberly and Ernst Brun were not found on the Barstormers’ official roster for Saturday Night. Neither player has commented on the news.

Porterie not flashy, but turning out great for Iowa

Donovan Porterie has been turning out as a very consistent quarterback. The veteran threw 12-17 for 165 yards and four touchdowns, however only two passes were dropped by receivers, the others being thrown away.

“We can be better. In certain situations we have got to buckle down a little bit more, and we’ve got a long way to go. We’ve definitely got to hit the field and study, we see them again so I think they will try to do some things different scheme wise,” Porterie said. “But I’m happy with what we did today, we got another W, 2-0, and we are looking forward to Wichita after the bye week.”

Iowa continued to peg Green Bay throughout the night in what might have been the most lopsided game in Barnstormers history. The Blizzard did not have anything to keep up with the Barnstormers on offense, and turned the ball over nearly 50% of there time on offense and kick returns.

Iowa heads into a bye week before starting a three-game road trip at Wichita Falls on March 11th.
