Welcome to the Lucha Underground review, while I fill in for Jeff DeHaan. We’re going to review the episode from Wednesday, April 15 on El Rey Network and cover just who had the edge in their segments of the night. You can find last weeks review here.

Lucha Underground Review Week of 04/15/15

Fighting Evil by Moonlight

The Trios Titles tournament continues but first we get a look at Aerostar looking to the sky. Is he looking for family? Is he yearning for his Yellow Lantern ring? Either way, he’s interrupted by the always suited in black Dario Cueto who builds up the main event of the night in the final match of the best of five between Aerostar and Drago. Good to see these two get the main event, even when the opener is where the main attractions appear.

King Cuerno, Cage and Texano Jr. vs. Prince Puma, Johnny Mundo and Hernandez

Hernandez was brought in by Konnan to be Puma’s partner, but didn’t expect Puma to trust Johnny Mundo. Either Konnan knows something we don’t or Konnan just doesn’t like abs on top of abs. Hernandez was a major name in TNA Wrestling for quite a few years, best known for his work in the Latin America Exchange. His second best known work is dropping guys on their heads.

Cuerno, Cage and Texano Jr. is a power trio of top rudos in the company. Cuerno got close to beating Puma last week and Cage nearly broke him in half like his name was Batman. Texano Jr. came in trying to exact revenge against Alberto El Patron but it’s no surprise he’d work together with Cage and Cuerno.

The match ended up being more of a showcase of the technicos than it was for the rudos. There wasn’t very many points in which the heels looked like they were going to win. That’s actually no surprise, since they did win. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat as Cuerno got some payback from the week prior by hitting the Thrill of the Hunt on Prince Puma and pinning the Lucha Underground champion to advance.

Edge: King Cuerno might have raised his stock back up by pinning the champion but its Prince Puma, Johnny Mundo and Hernandez that stole the match. You know in a rematch situation with better scouting, the bad guys ain’t gonna pull their tricks in the Temple again.

Sneak Threeview

Dario Cueto is happy to see the bad boys win like Pistons in 89 but he isn’t done with them, at least one of them. Cueto demands a triple threat match between a member of the winning team against members of other teams. This brings out The Mack from the team of Big Ryck, Killshot and Mack as well as Son of Havoc from the team of S.O.H., Ivelisse and Angelico. Cage stays in the ring to represent his team.

Cage vs. Son of Havoc vs. The Mack

It’s great to see guys like The Mack and Cage in Lucha Underground. Not only are they west coast favourites from their work in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, they are also heavyweights in Lucha Underground. Along with Big Ryck, Alberto El Patron and Hernandez, there is finally some serious size in the Temple. Son of Havoc worked to take the bigger bumps in the ring. It’s surprising that he’s so over, and more surprising it took me this long to realize he’s “Son of” Havoc in relation to “Sons of Anarchy”. I guess I was focused more on who “Mother of Havoc” and “Uncle of Havoc” might end up being. The Mack is like a modern day “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd and I think he has incredible potential in Lucha Underground. Despite already wrestling, Cage takes the win.

Edge: Despite The Mack being the most impressive in the match and Son of Havoc being the most popular, there’s no question that Cage deserves the edge. He just won two matches back to back. This is smart from Lucha Underground to keep him a complete monster in matches you might not remember six months ago, but you will remember the momentum. Oh, and Matt Striker? PCP Eyes? Really? Come on man, I want to like you.

Potty Humour

Cueto, despite running the Temple, still goes to the bathroom in the dirty, grimy, grungey bathrooms that everyone else goes in. I guess this does give him an opportunity to talk to Drago and speak about the importance of his “Special Opportunity”. At this point, give credit to Lucha Underground. They put a spotlight on two luchadors, elevated them through a wrestling series and made you want to see them in the main event over the likes of Prince Puma. Kudos.

Cheap Heat from Hell

Pentagon Jr. is in the ring getting an introduction from ring announcer Melissa Santos before deciding to put his hands on her to make a new sacrifice to his master.  It was definitely uncomfortable to hear Santos scream and try to run from Pentagon Jr., who has looked strong but doesn’t have a story. I thought we were getting one when Vampiro stood up to try and defend her but it was Sexy Star coming to her aid instead. I get the feeling this isn’t the last time Vampiro is going to try and confront Pentagon Jr. Old evil vs. New evil.

Lucha Underground Main Event
Best of Five Series (2-2)
Aerostar vs. Drago

Cueto does the introduction and stays around the ring. Makes it that much more eventful. Aerostar and Drago have already wrestled each other four times and still find ways to keep it interesting. The 10 minutes that Lucha Underground gives them feels more like 20, which is a compliment. Both men were virtually perfect. There’s not much to say about an Aerostar vs. Drago match that already hasn’t been said, other than it’s a must watch. The edge has to goto the winner.

Edge: Drago hits his signature move before locking the Dragon’s Lair/Tail of the Dragon for the win. Dario Cueto finally reveals what the special opportunity is: a title shot for the Lucha Championship! However, he isn’t letting Drago leave with a smile. If Drago doesn’t defeat Prince Puma and become champion? He’s exiled from the Temple. Aerostar might end up with the edge in the end, just because he’ll still be a member of Lucha Underground. Or Drago takes this series and moves onto being the best in Lucha Underground.

See you next week!
