Formula E Half Term Report: Andretti

The Andretti Formula E Team have had quite a turbulent start to their Formula E campaign. Fielding two Frenchman for Beijing, Charles Pic lines up eighth with Franck Montagny in ninth. The race proved a close one with both driers racing perilously close but ultimately it was Montagny who came out on top finishing second and on the podium with Pic in a very respectable fourth.

Reserve driver Matthew Brabham filled in at the next round for Pic as he resumed his F1 testing duties and qualified 10th with teammate Montagny 13th. However, it was a very underwhelming race with Montagny causing a collision and finishing 13th while Brabham came home just outside the points in 11th.

At the time of the Punta del Este ePrix, Franck Montagny stated he was ill and would not be racing. Therefore, Andretti drafted in Jean-Eric Vergne alongside Brabham. Vergne surpassed all expectations and qualified on pole while Brabham could only manage 19th due to limited running. The race was hard fought by Vergne who was constantly scrapping away at the sharp end. He looked as if he was on for the win and about to make the move on Sebastien Buemi before his car came to a halt and he was out. Meanwhile, Brabham crashed out spectacularly, although he was looking at a top 10 finish.

Before the Buenos Aires ePrix it was announced that Franck Montagny would no longer race for the team after having been suspended by the FIA and now fears for his motorsport career after testing positive for a derivative of cocaine following the Malaysian ePrix. As a result, Vergne once again raced for the team whilst Marco Andretti took Brabham’s place. Vergne qualified in sixth with Andretti in 14th. Another hectic Formula E race saw Vergne battle at the sharp end, practically pushing Bruno Senna round the penultimate corner on the final lap, however, he still finished in sixth with Andretti improving to 12th.

Although having used the most amount of drivers than any other team, Andretti have had a good start to their season. However, some more consistency in their driver line up might see them improving from their fourth position in the constructors. Ironically enough, Franck Montagny and Charles Pic are the highest of the Andretti drivers in the drivers standings yet for obvious reasons Montagny will not be reappearing, but Andretti never did explain what happened to Pic. It’s a shame, he was quite good.
