David Krejci, Bruins Agree to 6-Year Contract Extension

It was reported earlier on Wednesday that the Boston Bruins and David Krejci have agreed to a 6-year contract extension worth $43.5 million, which is by far the biggest off-season announcement for the Bruins as of yet.  The deal carries a cap hit of $7.25 million per season.

For the first two years of Krejci’s contract (2015-16, 2016-17) he’ll earn $7.25 million annually. For the next two (2017-18, 2018-19) he will earn $7.5 million, and for the final two years (2019-20, 2020-21) he’ll earn $7 million annually.

What Does Krejci’s Extension Mean?

There was a point in time when the great people of Boston believed that David Krejci should be traded due to “inconsistency”.  However, Krejci silenced his critics last season as he ranked first in the league for plus-minus with 39. In addition to that, Krejci led the Bruins in points and assists with 69 points and 50 assists, which is his second-greatest NHL season to date.

This extension basically means that the Bruins have banked that Krejci will consistently perform as he did last season, which is probably going to end up being true.

Though his performance is worthy of a pay increase, his cap hit is exceptionally large, and for a team that is currently struggling with dealing with the cap, this contract extension could prove to be a burden for the Bruins.  The length of Krejci’s contract is acceptable, but the financial aspect of the contract doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Patrice Bergeron, arguably the Bruins most important player, will be making $1 million less than Krejci after next season. Respectively, Bergeron should be making more money that Krejci, but there seems to be a ripple effect perpetrated by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane’s huge contract extensions.

Overall, Krejci and the Bruins extension is sensible, and will prove to be so for years to come.
