The 2014 FIFA World Cup looms. 23 players will be sent to attempt to lay the ghost of ’66 to rest, and many see it as England’s best chance in some time.
Liverpool have mounted an unprecedented title challenge fuelled by the leadership and steel of Steven Gerrard, along with the goals of Daniel Sturridge, the flair and pace of Raheem Sterling, and the energy and drive of a seemingly reborn Jordan Henderson, all English players who have a plane ticket already booked in their name. But not all places are guaranteed. Some players will end the season on a high with a phone call from Roy Hodgson, while others will be left out in the cold to watch the tournament from afar. Some players aren’t a certainty, but in my eyes, simply must be on the plane.
Ross Barkley
Fresh off the back of a stunning goal against Manchester City, Ross Barkley is one of the country’s hottest prospects. Formerly eligible for Nigeria, he has made a number of England appearances this season due to his impressive performances for the resurgent Everton, scoring a number of dazzling goals such as his solo effort against Newcastle and a terrific free kick at Swansea.
Barkley’s decision making is questionable at times, but his ability to beat a man with ease and drive the team forward when in possession are qualities that England can’t afford to miss out on in Brazil.
John Flanagan
One of the unsung heroes of Liverpool’s remarkable season, John Flanagan has more than filled the gap of absentees Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique throughout their injuries. Strong in the tackle and fully committed to the cause of the team, Flanagan has shown composure beyond his 21 years and his emergence has been one of the highlights of Liverpool’s already phenomenal season which may still see them win the league title.
With the potential absence of Kyle Walker, Flanagan is a must to go on the plane, offering great energy in the searing heat, and unquestionable passion for the England effort.
Gareth Barry
Since joining Everton on loan, Gareth Barry has rebuilt his reputation as one of the most dependable players in the country. An outstanding passer of the ball, and not afraid of the odd 50/50, Barry has become a constant in the Everton first XI. However, with the memory of 2010 and Barry watching Mesut Özil glide past him in the last 16, Hodgson may be put off by Barry’s old age and slight lack of pace. But in terms of quality, Barry needs to be on the plane.
James Milner
James Milner has always received bad press. Not the quickest or blessed with sublime skill, Milner isn’t a firm favourite among the England faithful, although fans of Manchester City have begun to warm to the hard-working former Villa man. With unrivalled energy and work ethic, Milner never gives up and is essential in a side with full backs as attacking as that of England, and Milner is there to clean up.
