WrestleMania Preview: Will The Shield's stranglehold over WWE end at WrestleMania?

The Shield are arguably the most dominant force the WWE have ever produced. Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose have created a modern phenomenon and this stable has slowly become the best thing to come out of WWE in years.

After a successful Wrestlemania debut last year against the team of The Big Show, Randy Orton and Sheamus, The Shield could continue their success on the grandest stage of them all with a win over Kane and The New Age Outlaws this Sunday.

The rumours about The Shield’s WrestleMania match began late last year when the trio faced CM Punk in a handicap match at December’s TLC and Reigns inadvertently cost his team the match when he speared Ambrose.

The Shield cleared this up the following night on Raw and it seemed they were all back on the same page until The Royal Rumble when Ambrose tried to eliminate Reigns, only for Reigns to eliminate Ambrose and Rollins on the way to breaking Kane’s elimination record at the pay-per-view.

Again The Shield stuck together and agreed that The Royal Rumble was “every man for himself” and it seemed they had patched everything up when they walked into a feud with The Wyatt Family and completely stole the show at Elimination Chamber.

Rollins eventually took offence to the way his team mates were treating him and he called for a summit on Smackdown and after hitting Ambrose and The United States Champion returning the favour. After the discussion it seemed the trio were finally back on the same page.

That was until they turned on Kane and The Authority. Corporate Kane took offence to this and lately there has been a lot of back and forth between the two and it looked like The Shield had the upper-hand over the former big red machine until The New Age Outlaws involved themselves in the feud.

The former tag team champions helped Kane dissect The Shield in a way no team has ever done before two weeks ago on Smackdown. Their WrestleMania match was announced not long after and this weekend they will collide in what has been dubbed “new vs. old.”

Lately The Shield have been proving their dominance with Ambrose and Rollins teaming up to take out all the guys who were involved in Kane’s destruction of them.

Whilst the rumours of The Shield’s imminent split still fill the air and the memories of Kane and The Outlaws destruction still fresh in the minds of the WWE Universe, it’s hard to predict who will stand victorious on “the grandest stage of them all.”

If The Shield lose clean, it could see them all fall out again over the fact that they couldn’t beat a team that are thought to be pat their best. If trio don’t co-exist and end up losing by DQ it could also set up the rumoured Roman Reigns singles run.

The build-up to this match could have been better; it seems The Shield have been dropped into a pointless feud after their amazing display at Elimination Chamber and WWE have no idea what to do with them. There is nothing riding on this match and it means The Shield will have to work harder to put over opponents that are not as strong as them in the ring as they may have been in the late 90s.

Rollins has been excelling in the ring as of late and could be the stand out star of this WrestleMania if he was given the right opponent. Fans are still filled with disappointment after rumours suggested Roman vs. Seth vs. Dean would happen at next month’s showcase.

Who knows what match would have taken place if CM Punk hadn’t walked out, because he himself was in a feud with Kane a few months ago. But WWE have pieced together a new, somewhat rushed feud that should give The Shield the stepping stone they need to ignite the feud everyone has been waiting for.

Although it does seem we will have to wait a little longer for the demise of the trio, it’s hard to see past a win for them here. Hopefully they will steal the show again and show WWE that no matter who they face, they are the best at what they do.
