Looking For A Little Respect in The Press

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed it this season but Arsenal are playing some pretty amazing football – yet it would appear that the press don’t seem to agree.

I was watching the analysis section of Monday Night Football on Sky Sports this week and it occurred to me that Jamie Carragher and, even more so, Gary Neville cannot accept that we could be seeing the early stages of a shift in power at the top of the Premier League.

Many press outlets are reluctant to even consider the notion that Manchester United could possibly be a spent force ever since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to take up a viewing position in the comfy seats a little higher up in the stand. That reluctance on behalf of the press may well be down in no small part to the Scot still casting his powerful shadow over the goings on at Old Trafford, with many unwilling to cross him even in retirement.

Last seasons Premier League trophy was possibly one of the easiest which United have ever won due to how poor the rest of the top six were, with the signing of Robin Van Persie papering over the cracks which were slowly beginning to appear.

This season however, Van Persie is yet to hit the heights of the previous two seasons and, with injuries keeping him off the field sporadically so far this season, doubts remain about whether he will do so.

There are other teams in the Premier League that deserve to be mentioned on the same scale as the Manchester giants such as Arsenal, obviously and also Liverpool who themselves are having a great season so far but with barely a mention – and even less so this week with the press determined to give as much space as possible to Sir Alex Ferguson’s new book.

Arsenal are playing the best football that I have seen in recent years and the signings of Mathieu Flamini and Mesut Ozil having made an amazing impact. It will take the team continuing to accumulate points on a consistent basis for them to convince everyone that the Gunners have a realistic chance of collecting silverware. The next four games will have a massive bearing on Arsenal’s season and doing well in those games would lead us up to the hectic Christmas period nicely, and as Arsenal fans are well aware, the New Year is when the form usually reaches it’s peak.

There is still much work to do and I still think that another striker is required in January because, should Olivier Giroud get injured, Arsenal will have a huge problem and I can’t see Nicklas Bendtner being able to fill the huge void that would be left.
