Cocktail Recipes for the Big Game: Sangria "Shagmea"

Today our Homegating/Tailgating section brings you another great cocktail recipe, perfect for the big game.  Be it football, hockey, baseball, basketball, footy from across the pond, MMA or whatever sport you enjoy, finding the perfect cocktail can add so much.  Heck, you can even drink it while your significant other watches American Idol – it might take away the pain.

SANGRIA “SHAGMEA” –

Make the morning of the Big Game

(This is a killer party favourite)

Use a large water jug, big vat, or large bottle or serving vessel

  • 3 oranges – sliced and halved

  • 3 limes – sliced and halved

  • 2 lemons – sliced and halved

  • 1-cup sugar

  • 1.5 litres of fruity red wine

  • 1 cup of Apricot Brandy

  • .5 Cup or Triple Sec or other orange-flavoured liqueur (Cointreau ok)

  • Juice of 2 limes

  • 750-ml. Of Sparkling Wine / inexpensive champagne (Prosecco – Italian Sparkling wine the best)

  1. Place fruit in bowl, then add sugar on top and cover at room temperature for 1 hour

  2. Pour wine, apricot brandy, triple sec, and lime juice over fruit to dissolve the sugar

  3. Chill mixture for minimum 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours

  4. Just minutes b4 serving, mix in champagne (or sparkling wine) and add enough ice cubes to make the drink frosty (if you can, chill the Shag-mea by putting ice in a closed airtight bag or container before dispersing in Shag-mea…it will not dilute as it melts)
