Up The Gunners: Hype, Hype and More Hype

F  me, the transfer BS rumours are driving me ’round the bend and it’s not even July yet!

It seems every player in the world is joining us.  Included in the circus are Wayne Rooney, Marouane Fellaini, Gonzalo Higuain, Clement Grenier, Nani and the beat goes on.  I really wonder how many of these players Wenger has even entertained approaching.  My gut says one or two, but certainly at the most 3.   The media love to sell newspapers, and apparently their readers appreciate reading excrement.

One amusing thing about the media is their headline choices.  Today’s headline “Wenger and Higuain Locked in talks” was particularly amusing.  So what, they were locked in a cellar under the Emirates while holding secret negotiations?  Please.

HYPE, HYPE, BS, HYPE…..

Basically, every year the window starts off exciting but soon becomes a pain in the arse.  I for one cannot wait till the season starts, and whichever 11 players have the honour to wear the famous shirt against Aston Villa on opening day, I will be cheering from the rooftops – “UP THE GUNNERS”.

Allow me to daydream for a minute…

As I stated in my last installment, the main thing we need to improve is our spine of the side, but how do we do that?  Well Fellani would be perfect in the Patrick Viera-like role, thus letting the likes of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere create and direct us going forward.  Let’s imagine we’ve got him looked up, we need a striker.  Even though I hate him, Rooney would be good for us.  He’s a classy premiership player that’s used to winning.  Yes, he has an attitude and likes grannies, but on the pitch he is quality with a touch of the nasty that we need to add.  Will we sign?  No.  Out of the question.

Higuian from Real has been everywhere (on Twitter he has had 556 medicals so far).  The Argentine has an outstanding scoring record and is just the poacher type we need.  He also would play well off Olivier Giroud (a good 1st season, and he can only improve).  But will we get him?  I hope so, but until it’s on Arsenal.com holding the shirt with a cheesy smile, then I won’t believe it, and neither should you.  I will say, there is a lot of hype on this deal getting done.

So that’s my view on incoming players.  Now what about the deadwood?  Well, Andrey Arshavin, Denilson, Sebastian Squillaci are  all gone, and if we all hold hands and pray together, hopefully Nicklas Bendtner follows quickly soon too.  I do feel a bit sorry for the sickly Abou Diaby.  He’s very good when fit, but surely we have to just cut our losses.  He spends more time on the treatment table than the club doctor does. Harsh?  Yes, but dammit, it’s frustrating!  Will the real Thomas Vermaelen stand up this season?  He was a leader once but was as soft as a marshmallow last season so.  It was so disappointing, and I still shake my head at it.

Yes we have a lot of work to do over the next few weeks; will we make the glamour signings, or will we be battling for the 4th place cup again?  Please, Lord, let it be the former.

Right, until next time, UP THE GUNNERS!
