Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

An Historic 2000th Article and the Best of the Best

When LWOS began back in September of 2011, our goals were very modest.  In fact, I can’t even recall if we had any.  Much has changed in the past 21 months; the site has been revamped several times, we have added new features, delved in radio, made many connections to fantastic brands and websites, but that is not what made us who we are today.  Today, in this 2000th article, we pay homage to what really got us to where we are today; our fantastic writers.

Some have come and gone, and we thank them for their time dedicated to the site.  Others have come on board more recently and have already carved their own piece of what is a very rapidly growing team.  While I don’t want to get into shout-outs for the risk of excluding someone, I will congratulate those who routinely make it a point to help the site by providing our readers with top-notch analysis and commentary on a regular basis.

We have had several articles written by our staff that have particularly propelled us into what we feel is fast becoming a very serious, credible site for readers interested in unbiased, honest articles written by life-long fans of whatever game they are writing about.  Here you will find the five articles that not only represent the greatest generators of traffic, but were also the very much game changers.

On behalf of the 30+ casual and more permanent writers at LWOS, as well as the fine group of administrators, thank you for your loyalty.  Should you wish to join our team and write for our team, please send email to [email protected].

Without further ado, here are the top five most read articles in LWOS history:

#5)  Rivalries always spark a lot of attention, and when our article “The Hypocrisy of Claude Julien” was published, it illicited incredible attention.  Basically the article was in response to the Bruins’ coach Claude’s press conference after a heated game against their bitter rivals from Montreal.  Julien complained bitterly about the refereeing, which many (not only Habs fans) found to be an incredibly hypocritical stance by the coach.  The rant was very well received, and Twitter was a-buzz with people sharing the article.

#4)  Ben Kerr is fast becoming a go-to source for everything “NHL Draft”.  There is one article that really put him on the map though – “NHL Draft Prospect Profile #4: Alex Galchenyuk“.  The really interesting thing we noticed about this article was that it was the fourth in a series.  Its success is what springboarded our pursuit of becoming one of the foremost authorities on junior hockey, and in particular the NHL Draft.  In fact, our second most visited page (after only the home page) is Kerr’s NHL Draft 2013 Headquarters – if you’re a hockey fan, visit, bookmark and share it!

#3)  Perhaps the one article that took us from obscurity to relevance was one written by Jack Stone.  His article, “What You May Not Know About Didier Drogba” quite literally exploded from nowhere for the site.  Essentially, Jack is a fan of the good that athletes do.  He enjoys hearing about the ones who donate their time and money for the good of all.  So when he realized the great things that Didier Drogba has done he decided to put pen to paper… err, fingers to keyboard.  If you don’t know about the amazing charitable and humanitarian work of Didier Drogba, give this a read.

#2)  A new foray for us, we promoted an infographic titled, “The Skinny on Beer Prices From Around the NHL” on February 25, 2013.  Our connection with SaveOnBrew.com is only one of interest, not financial in any way.  The site gave us special permission to run the infographic, which was incredibly well received across Twitter, message boards, Facebook, and was even shared on some of the Internet’s mammoth hockey sites.  While it wasn’t a norm for us, and still is just a once-in-a-while thing for us, its success in terms of readership, was unrivaled – almost.

#1)  Our number one article in LWOS history is undoubtedly “Ottawa Sun Crosses the Line“.  This article was written by one of our site administrators, Ben Kerr, and was essentially a rant about a news headline.  In the first game in the 2013 NHL series between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens, Habs forward Lars Eller was crushed by Sens D-man Eric Gryba, opening up a very nasty gash.  The bloody image was captured and used on the front page of the Ottawa Sun newspaper with the Caption, “First Blood Sens”.  Kerr took exception, and wrote his critical rant as soon as the Sun published it.  The result was nothing short of “viral”.  Facebook erupted, message boards followed suit, and the site really became a recognized name in many circles.  While it was not Ben’s intent, his rant was well received, and was generally agreed with by most hockey fans.  The article is so huge, it has done nearly double the number of page views of the next highest article in the site.

Once more, on behalf of the staff at LWOS thank you for your interest in our site.  If you’re not a regular already, we hope you will become one soon.  And to the wonderful writers past and present, our sincerest thanks.  YOU made this all possible.

We’ll be back to revisit this in 1000 articles or so, and with the way our site is growing, we hope to see some of the new ones, crack the top 5.
