FANTASY PROFILE: Elvis Andrus, SS, Texas Rangers

LWOS Ranking 7 , Captain’s Value: $13.44

It seems like Elvis Andrus has been a mainstay in the Rangers lineup for a very long time, and yet he’s only 25. Since breaking into the MLB at the age of 20, Andrus has stolen 20+ bases every year. That is Andrus’ main weapon, his speed.

Andrus hasn’t been a huge power threat (career slugging of .345) but has a very respectable career on-base percentage of .335. Like mentioned before though, if you’re drafting Andrus, you’re more than likely drafting him for his wheels. Since 2009, Andrus is 4th in stolen base totals (behind Rajai Davis, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Michael Bourn) and unlike the guys ahead of him, is still very young. He’s an elite stolen base threat, other than his mediocre stolen base percentages (74.4% success rate) but that shouldn’t be a problem if he’s given the go ahead to run. Andrus also hits well enough to get on at a decent rate to truly allow him to showcase his speed.

It was once thought that Andrus would have some competition for the SS position with uber-prospect Jurickson Profar not far behind. However with the reoccurring shoulder issues Profar is currently facing, it seems that Andrus shouldn’t have a problem holding down the position. Andrus has also been one of the most durable players, not getting under 580 at-bats since his rookie year in 2009. Many people seem down on Andrus, and if you look at him as a whole I can see why. But as a major stolen base threat, from a fairly thin position, I will utilize Andrus for his true talent.
