The Great Dane Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen has been on top form recently, notching three goals and one assist in the last five Premier league matches.

Last summer, Tottenham spent a lot of money on transfers, but perhaps their best work was in signing Eriksen, who transferred from Ajax at a fee of £ 11.5 million. At first, he did not bring his sublime form over from Holland, as he took some time to adjust to the Premier League and also dealt with injury issues, but his play in recent months has been nothing short of stellar. For a 21-year-old, he is simply sensational on the pitch. He can score a goal as well as he can set up a goal. His free-kick against West Brom was a particular highlight, but his goal and assist against United were brilliant too.

If Eriksen is good now, what is he going to be like at his peak in say, 5 years? Of course, we cannot predict a footballer’s future and all sorts of things can happen which lead to failures, or successes. Just take David Bentley for example, another Spurs starlet. Branded the next David Beckham, he is now a free agent after injury struck him hard. Lets hope that Eriksen can avoid injury and can continue to thrive at the top of the Premier League with Tottenham. Whether he stays with Spurs is another matter, but for now he is a Lilywhite, and for the fans he is an idol.

The Spurs midfield is still looking a bit patchy with Sandro and Paulinho missing due to injury. However, a duo of Eriksen and Mousa Dembele is simply perfect! Dembele does the dirty work which Sandro is perhaps more suited to, and Eriksen pulls the strings up front linking midfield with the attack. Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Sigurdsson are also on the bench, ready to revitalise the midfield if needs be. However, against Swansea last game, Holtby was not used a sub. Perhaps the wrong decision in my opinion as Dembele looked to be faltering a little, and with Sigurdsson on the field (a more attacking player) it left our defence open for attack. Holtby can compete in all aspects in midfield and could of been used. When Spurs do have a fit midfield, wouldn’t it be superb to have Sandro, Dembele and Eriksen or Sandro, Paulinho and Eriksen? Sandro as holding midfielder and the other two pushing up. Tottenham’s midfield would be rock solid. Lurking in the background remains Erik Lamela, who still has a ton of potential, but has yet to realize it at White Hart Lane.  If he ever comes into form, the nightmares caused for Spurs opponents will be immense.

Eriksen is good at linking up with Emmanuel Adebayor, having already assisted twice this season. Both of those assists were from brilliant crosses. The Great Dane seems to have a knack to crossing the ball exactly where the striker wants it, and where the goalkeeper can’t deal with it. Perhaps this knowledge can be used to help Soldado achieve his true potential at Spurs. A player of Eriksen’s class can bring out the class in the players around him.
