The Lamar Hunt U.S.Open Cup third round kicked off with a bang on Tuesday night. The tournament saw inclusion from the MLS teams for the first time, facing off with USL clubs.
Old rivalries were renewed and Detroit City earned a major upset.
Detroit City FC 2, Columbus Crew 1
As Detroit City said themselves on social media, “don’t call it a comeback” because they’ve been here for years. Detroit hosted the 2020 MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew SC, and pulled off a major upset at home. Columbus got the early lead on the road in the 7th minute, with Gyasi Zardes converting a penalty kick.

However, the second half turned into the Maxi Rodriguez show. In the 64th minute, Rodriguez equalized on a header. However, the stadium erupted in the 86th minute when Rodriguez converted his penalty kick past Crew goalkeeper Evan Bush.

FC Cincinnati 2, Pittsburgh Riverhounds 0 (A.E.T.)
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds put up a strong fight against FC Cincinnati, but couldn’t wrap up a victory. Pittsburgh was the better looking team in the first and second half, having chance after chance stopped by Roman Celentano.
Cincinnati and the Riverhounds fought it out and finished the match scoreless. In stoppage time, the tides began to turn to Cincinnati. In the 94th minute, Riverhounds goalkeeper Jahmali Waite fouled Álvaro Barreal inside the box. Barreal, the 21-year-old from Argentina, stepped up to the spot and converted his penalty. Barreal was the hero for Cincinnati, scoring again in the 99th minute to seal the deal for the former USL side.
Chicago Fire 2 (4), Union Omaha 2 (5)
The Chicago Fire had it it in their hands… and then it slipped away. Chicago took the lead twice and then Union Omaha of the USL League 1 equalized. After a scoreless first half, Chicago opened up the scoring in the 53rd minute, with 31-year-old Saudi Arabian international Rafael Czichos finding the back of the net. Noe Meza of Union Omaha slotted home the equalizer in the 68th minute.
The match went into extra time, with Chicago and Union Omaha going scoreless in the first 15 minutes. Then, chaos ensued. Czichos found a second goal in the 115th minute. Seven minutes later, Alex Touche, a 21-year-old from London, scored another equalizer for Union Omaha.
In penalties, it was a crucial first miss from Kacper Przybyłko that set the tone for Chicago. After getting a reprieve from a miss from Meza, Chicago had a second miss on the sixth kick, courtesy of Venezuela international Miguel Navarro.
