This was an even game between Cavalry FC and York 9. However, Cavalry FC was slightly the better team and it showed on the scoreline. They had the better chances and threatened the backline more often than York 9.
Marcus Haber Scores Game-Winning Goal for Cavalry FC
Three Keys to the Game
Cavalry FC Had the Better Chances
Cavalry FC had 12 shots and four on target. This is almost identical to York 9’s 11 shots with four of them hitting the target. However, Cavalry FC’s chances looked more threatening then York 9. In the 12-minute, Oliver Minatel stole the ball and had a great chance on goal but was tackled hard by Roger Thompson. They also had a particularly good chance to score in the 59 and 69 minutes of play in the game.

York 9 Did Not Have Many Great Scoring Chances
York 9 did not threaten the Cavalry FC defence in their last first-round game. Yes, they had the same amount of shots as Cavalry FC. However, all their shots on goal did not pose any danger to the Cavs goalkeeper Marco Carducci. An example would be Michael Petrasso, whose shot in the 54-minute play was saved comfortably by Carducci. The only big chance they had was a Ryan Telfer header late in the first half.
45’ + 6 – Our best chance of the half! Telfer just misses heading in his first of The Island Games.

Nathan Ingham’s Mistake Leads to a Cavalry FC Goal
Nathan Mavila got a shot on goal off in the 69-minute, which was stopped by Nathan Ingham. The problem was Ingham gave a huge rebound after making the save. This mistake led to Marcus Haber shooting the ball into the back of the net. However, Haber scored the goal, which is why he is the player of the game.
As a result, Cavalry FC will advance to the group stage with the best record in the Canadian Premier League. They join defending CPL champions Hamilton Forge FC into the group stage of “The Island Games”, which will start on September 9.

Overview of the Cavalry FC vs. York 9 Review
Best wishes should be given to Minatel. The Brazilian unfortunately suffered a scary injury in the 13-minute of the game and is currently in hospital undergoing surgery. Everyone in Last Word on Soccer wishes him a speedy recovery.
Tommy Wheeldon Jr. says Oliver Minatel is going into surgery right now. #CavalryFC does not know the full extent of the injury at this point. #CanPL

This was a big win for the Cavs. Only a win would have guaranteed them a spot into the group stage. They have accomplished that on Saturday against York 9. For York 9, they may have played their last game in the Canadian Premier League this year. Their fate will be known tomorrow.

The Fate of York9 FC Will Be Known Tomorrow
A tie would not have guaranteed York 9 a top-four berth. However, it would have helped them. Each point is important, and the HFX Wanderers FC only needs a tie to surpass York 9. Both teams are equal in the tie-break. This is because the Wanderers currently have a better goal differential than York 9.
Furthermore, Pacific FC and Atletico Ottawa can both also pass above York 9 in the first round with a win tomorrow.
York 9 will hope FC Edmonton will help them qualify for the group stage. Edmonton’s game with Pacific FC will take place at 3:00 PM EST. This is while Halifax will face Ottawa at 12:00 PM EST. The only thing York 9 players can do now is to watch the two-games and hope that at least one of the results bounce their way. The top four teams qualify for the group stage of “The Island Games” at UPEI Artificial Turf Field in Prince Edward Island.
