Sergio Santos provided the breakthrough for Philadelphia in the 63rd minute following a giveaway in midfield by New England’s Gustavo Bou. After Philadelphia reclaimed possession, Kai Wagner released Jamiro Monteiro, who chipped the ball forward for a surging Santos.

Santos ran past Brandon Bye and claimed the feed near the left side of the box, then blasted the ball inside the far corner to give his team at lead they would not relinquish.

Philadelphia is now in the quarterfinals and will play the winner of Sunday night’s Round of 16 clash between Sporting Kansas City and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Tempers flared at times between New England and Philadelphia, though match referee Ismail Elfath didn’t brandish a card until he ejected Revolution head coach/sporting director Bruce Arena after the final whistle.

New England controlled large portions of the game, though both sides struggled to remain composed in the attacking third.

The Revolution out-shot Philadelphia 18–12, with only five shots on target, as their lack of finesse in front of net continued to be a theme in the tournament.

Tajon Buchanan had a bid from point-blank range stopped by the Union’s Andre Blake in the 35th minute. Blake also palmed away a freekick by Bou in the 56th minute, and saved Adam Buksa’s 66th-minute header from close-in.
