Hamilton, Canada (Aug. 2, 2019) — Forge FC announced the signing of David Edgar late Friday morning. The 32-year old defender is a 42-time Canadian international who will bring experience and stability to the Forge FC backline.

Edgar most recently played in the English National League with Hartlepool United for a short stint. He spent time in the USL with Nashville and Ottawa in 2018 after a somewhat disappointing stint in MLS with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Prior to his time in MLS, Edgar played in the Premier League, Championship and League One in England.

David brings significant experience to our team and we are very happy to have him join us,” Forge FC manager Bobby Smyrniotis said. “His knowledge of the international game for both club and country will be a very valuable asset for us moving forward.”

Edgar will join Forge FC pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. It is presently unclear whether he will be available for Forge’s next CONCACAF league game on Aug. 8. Forge won the first leg of the preliminary round 2-1 over Antigua GFC of Guatemala.

Expect Edgar to slot in next to Daniel Krutzen when he becomes available. The young Belgian scored against Antigua and has been crucial to the team’s success this season, playing all across the backline.

Welshman Recalled From Loan

FC Cincinnati have recalled Emery Welshman from his loan. The attacker had three goals and two assists in 11 appearances for Forge FC. Meanwhile, FC Cincinnati have also terminated Welshman’s contract. This should pave the way for him to sign in Israel as reported earlier this season.

Welshman spoke to fans via Twitter, thanking fans for the support and saying it has been “special” playing in Hamilton.

With Welshman on the move, Forge FC attacking depth will be tested. Although there are two strong options in David Choiniere and Kadell Thomas to take up a starting role, it remains to be seen who will get the call going forward.

Smyrniotis has rotated his squad heavily through the season to great success. Welshman will be missed. However, the Hamilton side should still be able to create plenty of scoring opportunities in their attacking, possession-focused style of play.
