United States Settle in After Gyasi Zardes Brace to Beat T&T

The United States created a bunch of chances throughout the 90 minutes on Saturday night. The hosts had most of the ball and got chances from the run of play and set pieces. Paul Arriola and Christian Pulisic had fantastic performances.

It took till the 41st minute for them to solve Marvin Phillip, who made some great saves in the game. Off a second ball on a set piece. Pulisic founds Aaron Long at the far post who headed the ball to score.

The two teams traded chances to end the first half and start the second half. Kevin Molino and Levi García both had chances as Tim Ream struggled

Gyasi Zardes put the game away after scoring two goals in three minutes. First, off a great passing sequence in the box, Nick Lima found Zardes for a tap in from a yard out. Then Zardes uncorked possibly the best goal of his international career to make it 3-0.

Substitute Jordan Morris had the primary assist on the final two goals. With some great passing through a demoralized Soca Warrior back line, Pulisic and Arriola scored and deserved to do so. Long added a second in the final minute of play. The match ended 6-0.

Three Takeaways:

Gyasi Zardes brace: This game had a slue of fantastic performances. Even those who didn’t score had chances, including Jozy Altidore who subbed on late. Zardes has to feel good scoring twice. Arriola and Pulisic were fantastic as well.

Through to the next round: The United States sit at the top of Group D with six points and a healthy goal differential. They’re already qualified for the knockout stage.

Revenge is a dish best served with no stoppage time: This was the first game for the USMNT against Trinidad & Tobago since the Hexagonal match that eliminated them from making the 2018 World Cup. This game wasn’t going to undo that result and the consequences in the aftermath. But the USMNT and Gregg Berhalter have something to feel good about and something to look forward to next week.
