Colorado Rapids Mistakes

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (April 20, 2019) – Saturday afternoon at SeatGeek Stadium saw two teams desperate for a win. Chicago Fire hosted Colorado Rapids and got the offensive output the proverbial doctor would have ordered. The attackers capitalized on Colorado Rapids mistakes to score three goals.

Everybody Gets a Goal: Chicago Fire Win off Colorado Rapids Mistakes

The match got off to a slow start as gusts of wind altered the ball movement, especially on long high crosses. Aleksandar Katai got a few of the early chances, including a shot he sent off the post in the 27th minute after dancing through the box.

Nemanja Nikolic got the first goal of the match in the 34th minute. Nicolas Gaitan sent a cross into the box that Nikolic found unchallenged and headed it past Tim Howard. Colorado pulled level in the 40th minute. Kei Kamara scored on a corner after goalkeeper David Ousted punched it right to him.

C.J. Sapong found the winner off a Colorado Rapids mistake in the 53rd minute. Tommy Smith couldn’t control a ball with the wind that allowed Katai to gain possession and run past him. He eventually found Sapong inside the six yard box for a tap in. Djordje Mihailovic added an insurance goal eight minutes later after he and Gaitan were able to get in behind the defense.

Katai scored on a fantastic strike in the 80th minute and the match ended 4-1. Jack Price was given a straight red card in the 86th minute after a VAR review for a tackle from behind.

Three Takeaways:

You get a goal and you get a goal: Every major attacking player for the Men in Red got a goal or assist in this game. After a few inconsistent performances, everyone in the front four had a good game a great moment to cap it off.

Defensive mistakes: At least three of the goals conceded by the Pids could have been prevented. Kofi Opare could have done better on the air on the first one. The second and third goal was bad gap control with no anticipation. This problem continues to cost them points.

Frustration at the end: Colorado showed a lot of frustration in this game. The Price red card and a yellow card to Diego Rubio were indicative of that.
