Gregg Berhalter Officially Named USMNT Head Coach

The rumblings have been out for a while, and even the strongly sourced reports everywhere. Now, we have official word from US Soccer that Berhalter will be the Head Coach of the USMNT going forward. US Soccer announced that Berhalter was confirmed during yesterday’s board of director’s vote in their press release.

“Chosen by U.S. Men’s National Team General Manager Earnie Stewart following a thorough search process, Berhalter’s appointment was officially ratified by the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors on Dec. 1 by a unanimous vote.”

While the hiring process was anything but thorough, Berhalter is one of the better options the USMNT had available. Berhalter’s ability to work with what he had at the “budget crunched” Columbus Crew will bode well in the National team set-up. The US haven’t had an astute tactician manage their team since Bob Bradley, and Berhalter will most definitely bring a good plan to the USMNT. His experience both as a player and manager should also benefit the USMNT. Earnie Stewart is obviously excited by the hire:

“We are excited to announce Gregg as the next head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team,” said Cordeiro via press release. “As an experienced former National Team player and highly regarded professional coach, we are confident he is the best person to guide our program forward.”

Berhalter called it an honor to coach the Men’s National Team:

“This is a tremendous honor,” Berhalter said. “Having played for the National Team I know what it means to represent our country. I believe in our players and our program, and together we will work to build something special and develop a team that will make our supporters proud.”

Berhalter’s will be officially introduced in a press conference with media in New York City on Tuesday, December 4th. His first action as manager will be the upcoming January Camp and subsequent friendlies, including the February 2nd friendly match against Costa Rica at Avaya Stadium in San Jose.
