Real Salt Lake Forward Corey Baird Wins 2018 MLS Rookie of the Year

Major League Soccer named Corey Baird its Rookie of the Year after the forward scored eight goals and added five assists for Real Salt Lake in 2018.

Real Salt Lake forward Corey Baird impressed all-season long in his debut year in MLS, and the rookie was awarded Monday with the MLS Rookie of the Year award.

Baird signed with RSL as the club’s 15th homegrown player, but before playing for the Claret and Cobalt he helped lead Stanford University to three NCAA national championships.

The forward joined RSL ahead of the 2018 season, where he made 21 starts across 31 league appearances, scoring eight goals and earning five assists. His goal-scoring total was tied for third on the team behind Damir Kreilach and Albert Rusnak.

Baird, who earned 42.88 percent of the first place votes, is the first Real Salt Lake player to win the MLS Rookie of the Year Award.

Orlando City SC forward Chris Mueller earned second place honors with 18.62 percent of the votes, followed by Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie at 15.11 percent.

Baird and Real Salt Lake take on Sporting Kansas City in the second leg of the MLS Western Conference semifinals on Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park. The match kicks off at 2 p.m. CT.
