UEFA Nations League: Spain comes from behind to takes three points at Wembley

Saul Niguez and Rodrigo scored to make the comeback possible as Spain came from behind in just 20 minutes to secure their first three points in the recently created UEFA Nations League.

Both World Cup teams are linked in the Group 4 of the UEFA Nations League A alongside Croatia, which will play for the first time in Europe’s new competition on September 11 against Spain.

Marcus Rashford opener in the 11th minute gave England confidence, but the moment of joy didn’t even last a minute as Saul equalized the game seconds later (12th).

Rodrigo put Spain ahead in the 31st minute and it was a slap in the face for the home country. It was Saul first international goal while Rodrigo’s third in a Spanish uniform.

No Lucky England

In the second half England tried everything, including a Danny Welbeck stoppage time goal that the official disallowed in the 90+7′ minute because of a foul on Spain’s goalkeeper David De Gea.

Welbeck replaced Rashford in the 90+4’ and almost stole a point from the Three Lions.

As Rashford scored first, it looked like the Manchester United striker will seal the deal, but it ended up being a choke job because the 20-year-old had great the chances to tie the game and just wasted all the opportunities.

For Spain, it was an important start of the Nations League as the tournament gives four spots for the Euro 2020.

Bad News

England also lost a key player as Luke Shaw left the match injured after stopping the game for over seven minutes at the beginning of the second half.

The Manchester United defender suffered a head injury after a collision with Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal. It was an unintentional play, but can be a serious issue for Shaw, who has eight international appearances. Shaw laid down on the pitch and received immediate treatment, including oxygen.
