Sporting KC Bring Back Krisztian Nemeth

Sporting KC have been on the search for a frontline attacking piece since they were eliminated from the postseason in 2017. While they were in good shape to continue on without acquiring someone, the prospects of being without their first choice striker for much of the year in Khiry Shelton has to have pushed them to act a little more quickly.

Nemeth broke out in the 2015 season, after he scored 16 goals in all competitions, including a slaloming run in Portland that won Goal of the Season. He asked for a pay-raise, Sporting balked, and he got sold to Al-Gharafa in Qatar.

Sporting KC tried to bring Nemeth back last season after it traded away Dom Dwyer. But, because he required a transfer fee to leave, he had to re-enter the league through the allocation process. Columbus held the top spot in the allocation rankings, but Sporting KC wasn’t willing to meet their asking price, which was $400k in some sort off allocation money. New England was, but he’s hardly made an appearance.

Now, Sporting KC acquired him for 50k less than last season’s price point, plus their 2020 first round draft pick. That’s not a whole lot less in value for a player who has only scored a goal and notched three assists in around a full season with New England. But he returns, to a much changed Sporting KC tactically than when he was last with the club.

Vermes said via press release that, “Krisztian is a player who has had success at our club and knows what goals we want to accomplish. We are excited to welcome him back to Sporting KC, and his familiarity with our system will help him acclimate as we continue to push for playoff positioning.”

Nemeth and Vermes will address the media

Transaction: Sporting KC acquire Krisztian Nemeth from the New England Revolution in exchange for $250k in TAM, $100k in GAM, and Sporting’s 2020 Natural First Round SuperDraft selection.
