SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (July 21, 2018) — Seattle Sounders FC haven’t moved up in the MLS standings, but the team is gathering crucial points.
The Sounders started the 2018 season slowly but are now on a four-game unbeaten streak. After a victory over the Colorado Rapids on July 4, the Sounders drew against the New England Revolution and Atlanta United FC.
Seattle Sounders Keep Momentum Strong With 2-0 Victory Over Vancouver Whitecaps
On Saturday, the Sounders claimed a 2-0 victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps. In the four-game slew, Seattle picked up eight points, bringing them up to 20 points.
However, the team still sits in 10th place.
But Seattle is shortening the margin. Vancouver sits ahead of Seattle, in ninth place, with 26 points.
Nicolás Lodeiro continued his hot-streak against Vancouver. Both goals were netted by the Uruguay international, starting the match with a fifth-minute penalty kick. Lodeiro scored again in the 31st minute. Víctor Rodríguez assisted the goal.
Lodeiro’s teammate, Kelvin Leerdam, said that Seattle is in a better position when the midfielder — who commonly wears the captain’s armband — is having a good match.
“He’s the guy who gives us the best chances to win games with his through passes and the creativity that he brings,” Leerdam said. “It’s very important that when he feels good, the whole team can follow his game.”

Three Takeaways
- Welcome to MLS, Ruidíaz: Making his Seattle Sounders FC debut, Raúl Ruidíaz made the crowd roar at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Ruidíaz entered the match in the 61st minute, relieving Will Bruin of his duties. In 29 minutes, Ruidíaz had a shot on goal but was denied by Stefan Marinovic.
- Lodeiro, Kim Kee-Hee awarded: For their efforts in scoring and preventing Kei Kamara from scoring, Lodeiro and defender Kim Kee-Hee were named to the MLS Team of the Week. For Kim, a South Korean international, it was his first Team of the Week honor. Meanwhile, Cristian Roldan was named to the Team of the Week Bench.
- Lack of discipline for Vancouver: It was a nightmare match for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Seattle. Five yellow cards — and one red card — was given out during the match. Efraín Juárez was given a yellow card in the 77th minute, and seconds later received a red for “foul and abusive language.”
