The New York Red Bulls have not defeated Sporting Kansas City since 2014. On Saturday, they hosted Sporting at Red Bull Arena in a battle of last year’s U.S. Open Cup finalists.

Pride Night at Red Bull Arena

Major League Soccer celebrated Pride Month in June with the Anyone Can Play initiative. Midfielder Ben Mines joined the Playing for Pride team and donated $50 as a result of his play for the month. Red Bull Pride Night, however, was held off until July. Rainbows filled the arena, from flags to scarves, from staff shirts to fan gear.

Early Scoring Marks First Half

Striker Bradley Wright-Phillips (5′) scored his 12th of the season, inching closer to the century mark (98) for the Red Bulls. Initially ruled offside, the Video Assistant Referee reversed the call. Sporting’s Johnny Russell leveled the match just three minutes later. The remainder of the half was physical (yellow cards to Yohan Croizet and Alex Muyl), but the tie score held to the halftime whistle.

The second half began with no changes to either lineup. Roger Espinoza took Sporting ahead in the 51st minute with a shot from outside the box. RBNY missed an opportunity to bring the game level again in the 68th minute. With an open net, Derrick Etienne Jr. could not get the shot on frame. Midfielder Marc Rzatkowski took charge and scored the tying goal in the 73rd minute, off a cross from Tyler Adams. He followed up with the go-ahead goal (79′) assisted by Sean Davis. Capped off with a save from Luis Robles, RBNY held on to their lead.

First Home Game for Head Coach Chris Armas

Chris Armas, the recently promoted head coach, still seems to have something to prove. Coming off a loss in the most recent Hudson River Derby, the team cannot drop points. Although they have two games in hand over conference leaders Atlanta United, a draw was not enough. The Red Bulls welcome a revitalized New England Revolution in their second matchup of the season.
