In the fourth of a five-game stretch for the New York Red Bulls, Daniel Royer and Bradley Wright-Phillips secured the team’s fifth home win. They were able to hold on by a 2-1 scoreline against the Seattle Sounders at Red Bull Arena.

Daniel Royer, Bradley-Wright Phillips Score in 2-1 Win Over Seattle Sounders

Although Daniel Royer has appeared in every game this season, he did not open his MLS account until RBNY’s match against the LA Galaxy. His goal in the 37th minute put RBNY on the board. A cross from Florian Valot found Royer’s foot by the far post. While he could not tally again in the match, all four of his shots were on frame. After a 17-goal season interrupted by injury last year, Royer is looking to stay healthy and repeat his success.

Bradley Wright-Phillips Nears Century Mark

In the second half, striker Bradley Wright-Phillips doubled the Red Bulls’ lead. In his first MLS start, defender Ethan Kutler recovered the ball outside the 18-yard box and crossed to center. Wright-Phillips redirected the ball with his head into the net in the 52nd minute. With the header, Wright-Phillips inches closer to 100 goals for his MLS career. Midfielders Alex Muyl and Florian Valot also kept Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei busy with a total of eleven saves.

Harry Shipp Pulls One Back

Red Bulls were able to maintain possession and hold on to the attack with 22 total shots, double the shots Seattle made. But in the 87th minute, substitute Harry Shipp’s shot bounced off the far post and in. Goalkeeper Luis Robles, who had four saves in his second game back from injury, was sure the ball was going wide and didn’t lunge after it. While both sides put up a fight in the waning minutes of the match, RBNY held on to take all three points. As the World Cup break begins for MLS, the Red Bulls continue with Open Cup play against the Philadelphia Union.
