CARSON, CA (July 27, 2017) – Early Thursday morning, LA Galaxy Head Coach Curt Onalfo was relieved of his duties as head coach. Former Seattle Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid will take over.

LA Galaxy’s Curt Onalfo Relieved Of Duties

Onalfo has been dismissed of his duties, effective immediately. Sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference, the Galaxy will now be under former LA coach and Sounders coach Sigi Schmid. Schmid will take over at the beginning of the Galaxy’s training session Thursday morning. Schmid will sign a contract that will keep him at the helm until 2018.

As stated before, the Galaxy sits in ninth place in the West with a 6-10-4 record and only have 22 points.

Onalfo replaced United States Men’s National Team head coach Bruce Arena back in December. As of now, Schmid is the winningest coach in MLS history. The move comes exactly a year and a day after Schmid was fired from his position in Seattle. Seattle went on to win the 2016 MLS Cup under current head coach Brian Schmetzer.

Onalfo had much knowledge of the Galaxy coming through their academy and USL affiliate. However, the record says otherwise.

Schmid takes over in what appears to be a perfect time. The Galaxy is currently finalizing a deal that will bring Giovani dos Santos’ brother to the team as a marquee Designated Player.

In his return, Schmid and the Galaxy will host — you guessed correctly — Schmetzer and the Sounders. The match can be seen on ESPN (10 pm EST) this Saturday.

Sigi, who won the 2008 MLS Cup with Columbus Crew SC, will work to reverse the curse of the Galaxy who are currently out of a playoff position. The five-time MLS Cup winners will be the first to six if they can make a cinderella run to the post-season this year.
