After a nearly two week hiatus for the Gold Cup group stage, Major League Soccer returns in a big way starting on Wednesday. 14 teams restart their push for the postseason during the middle of the week. And all 14 are back in action during the weekend, making this among the busiest weeks of the season.
Wednesday’s marquee matchup takes place at Yankee Stadium as New York City FC welcomes Toronto FC in the first of two meetings between the clubs this month. They also face one another on July 30th at BMO Field in Toronto. Three editions of “MLS After Dark” for you East Coasters are on tap. The LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders host the Vancouver Whitecaps, Real Salt Lake and D.C. United respectively.
The weekend’s slate of games begins with an inaugural Southern showdown between Orlando City SC and Atlanta United FC. Much like NYC and Toronto, the two sides meet again later in the month. Proceedings conclude on Sunday with two games on the West Coast. It includes a Cascadia clash as the Whitecaps welcome the Timbers to BC Place. Finally, Seattle gets to enjoy the friendly confines of CenturyLink Field for the second time this week, hosting a San Jose Earthquakes team that’s starting to find their form.
Robert and Matt took the title for week 19, both finishing with a 5-6 weekly record. John remains atop the overall standings and needs just five correct picks this week to hit the century mark. With a plethora of games on tap this week, it seems that’s all but certain barring a really bad week.
