Major League Soccer is taking a two-week break for the group stage of the Gold Cup. But before that, there is the important matter of 11 mid-week games, including five on Fourth of July Tuesday. Teams will hope to get a good result out of their respective matches in order to enter the break on a high note.
A handful of teams are a long way from home for their final match before the Gold Cup break. They include San Jose traveling to Atlanta on Tuesday and two late night tilts East Coast time a day later. Vancouver hosts New York City FC at 10 PM ET, followed by the Supporters’ Shield leading Chicago Fire (that sounds different, doesn’t it?) playing Portland at Providence Park with kickoff set for 10:30 PM ET.
The final game before the Gold Cup break commences is the number one team in the West, Sporting KC, hosting Philadelphia. The Union are riding high after a 3-0 drubbing of New England on Sunday. But they’ve only won once on the road while SKC remain unbeaten at Children’s Mercy Park.
Last week saw Kevin and Benny tie for the best record, going 6-4. It marked Benny’s first win of the season, so congrats to him. John, meanwhile, continues to lead in the overall standings. Daniel and Robert trail him by eight points, but the former gets the tiebreaker for second due to a better record picking last week’s games. With the season slightly past its midway point for most teams, there’s still plenty to play for.
Without further ado, here are our picks for week 19 of the MLS season!
