Our panel of writers found themselves with a crowded slate of MLS games to make picks on last week. That is far from the case in week 15. With most clubs idle due to the international window, there are only three MLS games on tap. Yes, the league continues to force some clubs to play while giving the majority of them the week off.
Given the limited schedule, we’ll be adding both USMNT World Cup qualifiers to this week’s picks. The Stars and Stripes face a must win situation on Thursday against Trinidad and Tobago Thursday night in Commerce City, CO. Our own Matt Pollard will be on location covering the game. Three days later, the US faces regional archrival Mexico at vaunted Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Saturday’s three-game tilt in MLS is highlighted by a nationally televised matchup between the Chicago Fire and Atlanta United FC (4 PM ET, Univision Deportes). The home-standing Fire will be out for revenge after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Atlanta earlier in the year. Sporting KC hosts Montreal later in the day. Things conclude with a night cap in Portland as the Timbers host FC Dallas. Both teams are coming off emphatic wins last week, especially Dallas who walloped RSL 6-2.
Matt is our defending weekly champion after going 10-5. He also broke a three-way tie in the middle of the pack between him, Dan and Benny. John and Robert still have a fair bit of distance at the top. But we’re not even halfway through the season so there’s plenty of time for everyone else to make a run and catch up.
