Sporting KC Sensational in 3-1 Win Over Colorado Rapids

Kansas City, KS (April 9, 2017) – Sporting KC got out to a real fast start tonight, and never looked back in their 3-1 defeat of the Colorado Rapids.

Sporting KC Sensational in 3-1 Win Over Colorado Rapids

There had been a lot of pressure on Sporting KC’s offense coming into the night. They’d only put in one goal themselves in four games, with the other goal coming via the own goal. They were pressing hard and got their first goal six minutes in and never looked back.

Gerso, Sporting KC’s big DP signing this off season made quite the impression from the start. His ball that fizzled across the six yard box made its way to Seth Sinovic whose first time shot was placed perfectly into the back of the net.

Gerso then finished off a superb counter-attacking move that started with great defense. A clearance out to Dwyer resulted in some beautiful hold up play. Dwyer then played an inch perfect ball into Roger Espinoza. Espinoza weighted his ball to the overlapping Gerso who took the chance perfectly and beat Tim Howard at the near post.

Sporting then added their third on yet another perfect counter-attack. Sinovic overlapped and timed it to perfection. His ball into Dom Dwyer was finished off with a perfect finish from Dwyer.

Colorado added their goal when referee, Allan Chapman awarded them a PK in stoppage time for a rather innocuous play. Kevin Doyle stepped up and buried the penalty past Tim Melia.

While Sporting dominated the game, Colorado didn’t go without chances. They had some perfect opportunities towards the end of the first half to pull one back. Tim Melia came up with some incredible saves off the line, and then the next play didn’t have someone to finish it off at the back-post.

Sporting KC are in fourth with nine points after tonight’s win. Houston currently have the tiebreaker based on total wins. Sporting KC has a better Goal Differential. They take on Portland Timbers in their next match.

The Colorado Rapids are down to ninth, tied with Minnesota and Vancouver, based on goal differential as all three have one win. They take on Real Salt Lake next week.
