Chicago (March 16th, 2017) – David Bingham has been called in to replace Brad Guzan on the US men’s national team roster for the upcoming CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers. The move comes as a result of Guzan and his wife expecting the birth of their second child within the next week or so.

Bingham has spent his entire professional career with the San Jose Earthquakes, but has only been a regular starter since 2015. He ranked top five in the league in saves in 2015, and had the second most clean sheets with 12. He has 21 total shutouts since 2015 and played all but 45 minutes over the last two years. His 230 saves over the past two seasons helped cement him as one of the best goalkeepers in MLS.
Bingham earned his first cap in January Camp of 2016 and has three appearances for the Stars and Stripes since. He showed plenty of disappointment after being left off the Copa America Squad.
This won’t significantly affect the team sheet come next Friday. Tim Howard is expected to be the starter as long as there are no significant setbacks in the next week. Rimando will still likely assume the role of the “backup” in case something terrible was to happen to Howard.
Guzan may not be the only player replaced, as Fabian Johnson came off after picking up an injury in today’s Europa League match for Borussia Mochengladbach, against Schalke.
The United States takes on Honduras, in San Jose, CA on Friday, March 24th. They then travel to Panama for a match four days later. Both games are crucial for the US’ 2018 World Cup qualification hopes. They currently sit in last place with a -5 goal differential. Getting three points in both these games will be incredibly important, as any further slip ups may see them on the outside looking in at the 2018 World Cup.
