NYCFC Sign Midfielder Alexander Ring

NYCFC announced the signing of Alexander Ring. He will help bolster their defensive midfield options and should be a starter.

February 1, 2016 – Today, NYCFC bolstered their defensive midfield options with the signing of Alexander Ring, once he receives the proper paperwork. He figures to slot right in to the starting lineup, as NYCFC don’t have any true defensive midfielders on their roster right now. Ring can also play on the right side of the midfield. He was signed from FC Kaiserslautern using Targeted Allocation Money to buy down his DP-level contract. The Finland international has made 42 appearances for his country.

“We look forward to integrating him into the club during the preseason and getting him working with Patrick and the rest of the coaching staff as we continue to build towards the start of the 2017 MLS season,” said NYCFC Director of Football Operations, Claudio Reyna. Hopefully, missing the beginning of preseason won’t effect his season too much.

Early Career

Ring spent the formative years of his playing career at Bayer Leverkusen. He then went back to Finland to play for HJK Helsinki. After spending a year on loan with Borussia Mönchengladbach, he went to FC Kaiserslautern. While at FC Kaiserslautern, he made 76 appearances, while notching eight goals.

Where He Fits With NYCFC

Ring will replace Andoni Iraola, but could also replace Frank Lampard. Ring is on the smaller side at 5 foot 9 inches, and will have to adjust to the physicality of MLS. However, as 2. Bundesliga is a pretty physical league, he should be able to adjust.

Ring is very excited to join NYCFC. He has a desire to leave a mark.

“I think when the people get to know me they will see I’m a winner and always give 110% and fight to win,” Ring said.

His winning mentality will be very beneficial in NYCFC’s push for the MLS Cup. This signing most likely will not be NYCFC’s last, as they have an open DP slot. But, it is another step towards building the opening day squad.
