NYCFC 2017 MLS Roster: Options Announced

Today, NYCFC announced their roster options for the upcoming MLS Season.

NYCFC 2017 MLS Roster: Options Announced

Options Declined

Connor Brandt, Jason Hernandez, Diego Martinez and Tony Taylor had their option declined. Brandt had injury problems and never appeared for NYCFC. Hernandez and Taylor appeared frequently, and it was a little surprising their options were declined. Martinez never really featured and was fined by MLS for using a homophobic slur.

Claudio Reyna expressed his gratitude for their part in reaching the playoffs.

“Every single one of these guys contributed towards the team reaching the Postseason for the first time and they will forever be part of this club’s history, even if their journey with NYCFC is ending.”

Options Accepted

RJ Allen, Frederic Brillant, Eirik Johansen, Ronald Matarrita, Tommy McNamara, Andre Rawls and Khiry Shelton had their options accepted. None of these are a surprise, although Rawls could elevate to back up if NYCFC get ride of Josh Saunders.

New Deals

NYCFC reached a new deal with Ethan White and Mikey Lopez. They also purchased Shannon Gomez from W Connection. As I highlighted earlier, Gomez could have the potential to make an impact next season, especially with Ronald Matarrita possibly leaving. Gomez was on the verge of playing with the first team, but he got injured. Lopez will also play a big role with the departures in the midfield.

Returning to Former Club

Federico Bravo and Steven Mendoza will be returning to Boca Juniors and Corinthians respectively. Most likely their buying options were too much for NYCFC to afford. However, NYCFC could still explore getting them on loan again next year.

Overall, NYCFC will need some defensive and midfield reinforcements. Look for them to address these issues in the MLS Draft and in the transfer window. Hopefully, NYCFC will be able to get some Manchester City Elite Development Squad players on loan to bolster the squad if necessary.
