On August 24th, 2023, WWE superstar Bray Wyatt passed away at age 36. WWE’s Chief Content Officer Triple H announced that he was in contact with the family of Windham Rotunda, known to the WWE Universe as Wyatt, “unexpectedly passed.” Wyatt has been out dealing with an unspecified illness since February of 2023.

At the time of this writing, there is no official cause of death from WWE or the Rotunda family. Bray Wyatt was an undeniable star in WWE and one of the wrestling industry’s most creative minds, central to several prominent characters and stories against talent like John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Randy Orton, and Seth Rollins

In Memoriam: Bray Wyatt Has Passed Away

For a performer as young as Bray Wyatt, he has left an indelible mark on the WWE Universe and professional wrestling. Bray Wyatt was a third-generation talent. He was the son of Mike Rotunda, known as IRS, and the grandson of Black Jack Mulligan. Wyatt was exclusive to either WWE or its developmental brands throughout his 11-year career. During his time with the company, Bray created some of the most compelling and bizarre characters to the delight of the WWE Universe.

Bray Wyatt was a constant innovator, probably best known for his “Fiend” character. It was a horror movie-inspired monster functioning much like an alter ego of his Bray Wyatt persona. However, he first rose to prominence with a Louisiana cult leader gimmick in NXT. Having helped launch NXT as part of the inaugural class, he debuted on Raw to begin his memorable run on the main roster.

Fans will always be captivated by the mysteries of Bray Wyatt. His signature Firefly Funhouse Match is still one of the most interesting matches that WWE has ever produced. Also, Wyatt attempted to break the mold at every point of his tenure with the company, even the ones he made for himself. In addition to his creative accomplishments, Bray was a former WWE Champion, two-time Universal Champion, and two-time tag team champion.

After Triple H made the initial announcement about Bray Wyatt, there was an outpouring of support. WWE talent, fans, and others within the wrestling industry all took to social media. It is heartbreaking, as few have ever captured the creative potential of wrestling like Wyatt.

Bray Wyatt’s stunning creativity will be missed and fondly remembered by his legions of fireflies across wrestling. All of us at Last Word on Pro Wrestling extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Windham “Bray Wyatt” Rotunda. Rest in Peace, Bray.
